Just upgraded to 12 Pro Max from an 8 Plus. The 8 plus had good, simple cameras with dependable results. I shot a lot of great photos on that phone! It shot good video, too. Low light was no-go and the sensor on the 2x camera wasn’t great, but otherwise that camera was aces. Simple operation, good results.
But these cameras on the 12 Pro Max are shockingly different. The camera app is redesigned to suit the new features, which I’m used to now. Maybe. But all the new computational photography, HDR, image processing, and Smart HDR have me confused. I find that photos look over-processed and over-sharpened.
Highlights are too often blown out and shadows are crushed into black, whereas I could easily shoot an HDR photo on my 8 plus that would keep highlights from clipping and bring up detail in the shadows. And all it took was just hitting the HDR button in the camera app. But the HDR button in the 12 Pro Max’s camera doesn’t seem to do the same thing. Honestly I’m not sure what it’s doing, if anything.
I’ve turned on Smart HDR in Settings and I have no idea what it does or what differences I can expect.
The front-facing camera has a wider angle and flat, washed out look. It doesn’t seem to focus as well at the 8 plus front cam.
The bigger sensor on the 1x lens is nice, and the sensor shift stabilization is amazing. But don’t get me started on the weird lens flares while shooting video. They’re so severe that I don’t see how this could possibly be an improvement over the 8 plus’s video.
What am I missing here? How can I get better results?
