Are photos taken with the iPhone 11 Pro’s telephoto (2x) lens any better than using the main lens and digitally zooming/cropping? The sensor behind the 2x lens is objectively worse than the main sensor but it often seems like it’s more than two times worse.

Photos and videos taken with the 2x lens are often grainy and generally not the best quality, except perhaps for outdoor shots on a bright sunny day.

To me it seems (this is subjective) that the 2x sensor is so much worse compared to the main sensor that it’s actually better to take regular photos and blow them up later. Am I wrong? Can someone with access to test patterns and charts confirm this?
