Moment lenses get a lot of love, and judging from all the online commentary and examples, rightfully so. However, I wasn’t quite ready to buy into their eco-system of lenses and cases yet, without knowing how much I’d actually use such a product.
I came across a fairly good (in my opinion) suite of Apexel branded lenses that includes a 110° wide, 170° super wide, 2x tele, fisheye, and macro lens for under $50 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JZWX2YF). My favorite are the tele and 110° wide angle. I’m assuming they are probably closest in focal length to the moment 58mm and 18mm lenses. These two usually go for $30 each on Apexel’s website, but the suite of 5 lenses for less money on Amazon is the way to go.
All the lenses appear to have decent glass and are made of heavy aluminum. They come with a screw-on clip that mounts over the phone lenses. I’m not a fan of the mount because it’s difficult to make sure the lenses are centered.
However, since the lenses all mount using a M17 (17mm) thread, I looked for and found a few cases from different manufacturers (like Sandmarc and Ulanzi) that are compatible. I settled on Ulanzi because they had models available for the iPhone 11’s (https://www.ulanzi.com/products/phone-photo-case-for-iphone-11-11pro-11-pro-max-ulanzi-cases). And, it didn’t hurt that it was only about $15 including shipping. Now I have perfectly centered, quick mount lenses.
So for about $65 I have a versatile suite of lenses that uses a mounting system that allows for more lens and case options. One more benefit is that several of the lenses also have a 37” thread on the front of the lens body, allowing for filters, step-up rings, etc.
I can in no way compare them to Moment or any other brand, since I’ve never used those. But these lenses (particularly the two mentioned above) look very good to my eye for both photo and video purposes. I hope this helps someone looking to test the waters of add-on lenses, as I have.
