Hey all!
I’ve been taking an iPhone photography course, and although I’ve been a photographer since the film and darkroom years, there’s always something new to learn.
In an early part of the course, the instructor recommends switching from High Efficiency mode (HEIC) to Most Compatible (JPEG).
I’ve used many third party apps on the iPhone to shoot RAW, so lossy compression is not something I’m used to dealing with until I decide to output to a specific medium.
But using the built-in Camera app has its benefits in some cases: like opening up quickly to get a shot you’d miss otherwise.
So my question is this: I don’t care about image storage size. I do care about details, cropping if I need to, and a decent color reproduction. I do output to screen 99.9999% of the time, usually for the web or Instagram.
When using the built-in Camera app, should I use HEIC or JPEG? Are there noticeable differences? Some folks said low light creates issues on the compression algorithm of HEIC. But I have to assume Apple keeps improving that, right?
I’m shooting the latest and greatest: iPhone 11 Pro Max, and iOS 13.2.
Thanks! 💚
