How to use Google Trips functionality in Google Maps
Google announced that Google Trips has reached the end of life and won’t be supported and can’t be used after August 5th, 2019.
I really liked Google Trips and used it a lot to plan my trips as I’ve outlined in my Google Trips review a while ago.
But Google already has incorporated many features of Google Trips into other services, namely Google Maps and Google Travel. Google promised to add a few other features from Google Trips into those apps and services. So here are a few hints on how to migrate from Google Trips to Google Maps and Google Travel by August 5th, 2019.
And it remains to be seen how the new iOS 13 Apple Maps can be used to plan trips. I’ll write about that as soon as I get my hands on the public beta.
Find things to do in Google Maps
One of the best features of Google Trips was the ability to get inspiration and suggestions for things to do at a particular location.
Google has already moved that feature into the Google Maps app. Just type things to do followed by e.g., a city in the search field in Google Maps, and you’ll get a list of suggested places to visit.
Just like in Google Trips, you can save those places to a list (that’s now in Google Maps, more on that in a minute) by tapping the bookmark icon.

Saved places from Google Trips are now in Google Maps
I’ve built quite a library of places I’ve been to and want to visit. Luckily, Google Trips saved them to Google Maps and so they’re accessible from the Google Maps app if you used Google Maps and Google Trips with the same Google account.
To see your lists of saved places from Google Trips:
- Open Google Maps
- Tap the menu (“hamburger”) icon in the top left corner
- In the menu select Your Places
- Tap the second option labeled Saved
- Here are your lists from Google Trips including all the saved places from past and future trips.
Find Saved Places in Google Maps app under Your Places.

Of course, this list is also accessible in Google Maps on a desktop computer.
To add a new list simply tap the big + icon in the lower right corner and enter a name and description for the list.
To save a place from Google Maps to one of your lists:
- Search for a place in the Google Maps app
- Tap the red place marker icon
- In the information sheet that will pop up tap the save symbol and select a list you want to save this place.
So basically, all the functionality to save and manage places has already Beene moved to Google Maps.
Also, if you use the things to do search in Google Maps, you can still save places from the list of suggestions to one of your lists just by tapping the bookmark icon.
Trips from Google Trips are now in Google Travel
You may wonder where all your trips from Google Trips have gone. Simply type https://google.com/travel and scroll down.
If you’re logged in with the same account for Google Trips and Google Travel, you’ll find all your past trips in a list at the bottom of the page.

Where are day plans?
Did you use day plans a lot? I didn’t find that one particularly helpful for a photographer. The time I spend somewhere differs quite a bit from the time a tourist spends there.
Nevertheless, people liked and used that feature. But unfortunately, day plans are gone for now. Maybe they'll show up somewhere by August 5th, when Google Trips will be retired.
Trip reservations like flights and hotel reservations
In the blog post about the end of life of Google Trips, they mention, that this feature will be incorporated into Google Travel. It’s not yet available at the time I wrote this blog post.
Conclusion
What I liked about Google Trips was that it brought several travel-related aspects together in a single app. Now, it seems that Google has separated those again.
For now, I’ll stick to Google Maps and Google Travel, but I’ll have a really good look at the new iOS 13 maps app. I noticed a few excellent features that could be used for traveling. Stay tuned.
